Best Adobe XD Alternatives in 2026

There are 2 replacements in our index for Adobe XD. We describe what each one is good at and what it gives up. Every entry links to the vendor's own pricing page, because published prices change and we would rather you check than trust.

About Adobe XD

Adobe XD is a desktop app for Mac and Windows: Adobe's own FAQ for the product covers downloading, installing and upgrading it on both.

Options in our index

Figma

Design & Creative

Visit Figma

Figma moved interface design into the browser, which removed the file-passing that older tools required. Several people can work in the same file at once, and handoff to developers is part of the product rather than an export.

Pricing: Free tier available; paid seats per editorconfirm on Figma's site ↗

Strengths

Real-time collaboration in a single file
Runs in the browser, so nothing to install or update
Handoff with inspectable specs and assets
Huge community file and plugin ecosystem

Trade-offs

Needs a decent connection; heavy files can lag offline
Per-editor pricing adds up for larger teams
Adobe XD files import imperfectly

Penpot

Design & Creative

Visit Penpot

Penpot is open source and can be self-hosted, which removes per-editor licence costs and keeps design files on your own infrastructure. It covers interface design and prototyping, though the plugin and template ecosystem is much smaller than the commercial browser tools.

Pricing: Free to self-host; a hosted free tier exists, with paid plans per editorconfirm on Penpot's site ↗

Strengths

Open source and self-hostable, so there is no per-editor licence
Uses open standards such as SVG, so files are not locked to the vendor
Browser-based with real-time collaboration
Handoff and CSS inspection are part of the product

Trade-offs

Plugin and template ecosystem is far smaller than the commercial tools
Self-hosting means owning upgrades, backups and uptime
Prototyping and developer handoff are less developed than the market leaders
